The Rhode Island Red is a heritage breed dating back to the late 1800’s with origins in the Rhode Island and Massachusetts areas. The breed is known for its great egg laying abilities, being one of the best large breed chickens, as well as, being a great meat bird, making it a wonderful dual purpose breed. With its origins from the Northeast, the breed is very hardy. The Rhode Island Red became a recognized breed by the American Poultry Association in 1904 and was recognized as the state bird of Rhode Island in 1954.
